Everything you need to know about Tricare Breast Pump Coverage

Tricare recently made some drastic updates to their Breast Pump Reimbursement Policy, and we have been getting a lot of questions and concerns from our moms regarding this policy change. We wanted to address all your questions into a single post to ensure that you understand the new Tricare Breast Pump Coverage Policy and are able to take full advantage of the benefits covered by your insurance.

Who is eligible to get Tricare breast pump and accessories?

All Tricare-eligible (TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, TRICARE Reserve Select, etc.) female beneficiaries with a birth event is eligible to qualify for a Tricare covered breast pump and accessories. A birth event includes a pregnant beneficiary or a female beneficiary who legally adopts an infant and intends to breastfeed.

When can I order my breast pump?

As a mother-to-be, you can order your Standard Electric Breast Pump on or after 27 weeks of pregnancy with a valid prescription for the breast pump from a Tricare authorized provider (Nurse practitioner, MD, nurse midwife, etc.)

What needs to be included in my prescription?

The prescription must be obtained through a Tricare-authorized physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife, and must, at a minimum, indicate the type of breast pump prescribed (manual or standard electric).     What breast pump supplies are covered through Tricare?

    Tricare covers the following replacement supplies after the birth event without a new prescription:

    - Storage bags: 90 bags every 30 days following the birth event

    - Valves/Membranes: 12 for each 12 months following the birth event

    - Flanges/Breast Shields: 1 set (2 shields/set) per birth event when a physician prescribes

    - Tubing: 1 set per birth event.

    - Locking Rings: 2 every 12 months

    - Bottles: 2 replacement bottles and caps/locking rings every 12 months following the birth event

    - Standard power adapters: 1 replacement per birth event, and not within 12 months of the breast pump purchase date


        **Unfortunately, we cannot send out any supplies to you before your baby is born. Once your baby is here, you can place a reorder here for your replacement supplies.

        Tricare covered breast pump and accessories

        So what can I receive every month?

        According to the new Tricare policy, you are eligible to receive 90 milk storage bags and a set of valves and membranes per 30 days. You can place a reorder here for your replacement supplies.

        What storage bags can I choose from?

        You have the option to choose from one of the following:

        - 80 Kiinde Twist Pouches

        - 40 Kiinde Twist Pouches + 50 Mother-K Milk Storage Bags

        - 100 Mother-K Storage Bags

            Is there an upgrade fee for the Spectra S1 Double Electric Breast Pump?

            Nope. There is no upgrade fee for the Spectra S1 Plus if you go through Baby Pavilion. We provide the breast pump at absolutely no cost to our Tricare moms.

            How do I qualify for a Tricare Breast Pump?

            • Step 1: Get a prescription.

            If you don’t have one, don’t worry! We’ve got a template prescription form that you can download, print, and have it signed by your physician. We can also help contact your doctor to obtain a prescription for you.

            • Step 2: Choose your breast pump.
